Funnel Focus | Diligence Character Time Activity

Diligence is: “Investing all my energy to complete the tasks assigned to me.” This means focusing your attention and effort on the task you are doing and finishing it on time.

Supplies Needed:
A pitcher of water
An empty bottle with a small opening
A funnel
A tray or sink

Place the empty bottle on the tray or in the sink and have your child try to pour the water into the bottle without spilling it.

Next, dump the bottle out and put the funnel in it. Fill the pitcher back up and let them try to fill the bottle again, this time using the funnel.

Talk About It: When you didn’t have the funnel, it was harder to keep the water from going everywhere. The water is similar to our attention. When we don’t focus on what we are doing, we can become easily distracted, which can cause the task to be sloppy or take longer. Similar to how the funnel focused all the water into the bottle, we need to make an effort to focus all our attention on what we are doing. You can do this by choosing to stay focused, going to a quiet room to work, and/or setting a time limit for how long you will work on the project. Show diligence by giving your full attention rather than trying to multitask or allowing yourself to get distracted.

Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.
Proverbs 4:25-27
